Hello, I am experiencing a serious problem with after effects.
It started when I right clicked a clip in my premiere pro timeline and chose «replace with after effects composition.» Upon moving the clip into my already open after effects project, the wrong still frame opened up in the comp viewer, followed by this error: After Effects Error: overflow converting ratio denominators.(17 :;18). Clicking OK does nothing, and even after closing after effects and restarting the computer, upon opening my project, I simply get this error which will not go away, and as long as it is open, I can do nothing else with after effects. I cannot just create a new project as several other comps are contained within this specific project, and because of this error I now have no access to them. What can I do to correct this?

Full Error Message is as follows: After Effects Error: overflow converting ratio denominators.(17 :;18)
I was using the replace with after effects comp option in Premiere when this error occurred
Running Premiere Pro and After Effects CS 5.5
No third party codecs or plug ins installed
MacBook Pro 2010 2.66 Ghz Core i7, 8 GB of RAM GeForce GT 330M
I am using openGL
The problem occurs whenever I open this one project file
I don’t know if I am using render multiple frames simultaneously multiprocessing.

This error either indicates a problem with the source footage or a specific effect. It’s simply a math error somewhere deep in the fabric of the project, e.g. by misinterpreting footage sizes. In order to open the project in AE without the warning cropping up immediately, you could try to open it with capslock, so it doesn’t attempt to render anything. Then you could at least inspect the footage in the project panel by selecting it. If you see something odd there, this might get you closer to finding the cause of the problems…

Alright, so I’ve tried turning off OpenGL, and opened my AfterEffects project with capslock held down. It still gives me this error. Also, after I click the OK box for the overflow error the first time, this box appears:
After clicking on this box, the perpetual overflow error appears, and greys out the rest of my After Effects UI, so there is no way for me to save a new version.

Hi Justin,
See if this will work: Leave the CAPS on before starting the program, hopefully that will allow you to have access (without the overflow error which is very frustrating)… if you do, then you probably know what to do next, but if not: change the frame rate by right clicking on the video file and clicking on «Interpret Footage» and then click on «Main…», then under «Frame Rate» select the «Conform to frame rate» and try to change the frame rate to the closest round number as the original frame rate. (If the original one is 30.05 change it to 30 and see if that works).

Justin,Has anybody figure out how to properly resolve this issue? My above description worked for me but the issue I have is that it will cut the length of the video when the frame rate is changed (despite what number you change it to).
I can’t believe that this issue is unresolved to date since researching it has been discussed for over 4 years now at different sites. I couldn’t find any solutions online.

Youre missing a video codec or it got corrupt with an update. Try uninstalling QuickTime, Divix, etc and reinstalling them one by one. That should fix the problem.
Also if special video software is required to run the footage you can also try pre converting the footage before applying any effects to it.

Just in case anyone is having this error and none of these solutions are relevant.
I just tried to open a project passed on to me today and go the error, I realised it is caused by a peice of footage exported from Final Cut Pro as a ‘reference movie’ instead of ‘self contained’ (an easy way to spot this kind of file is if it is a suspiciously small file -like a 30 second HD clip that is less than 1MB). I’m assuming this wasn’t a problem for the person who gave me the file as After Effects was able to access the render files that the reference movie were pointing to on their own computer, but now obviously After Effects can’t find the footage the file is referencing now because it’s not on my system.
The problem can be solved by deleting the footage from the composition, which can be difficult with the error popping up constantly.
Alternatively, if the footage is really important to the composition, just export it again from FCP as a self contained movie and replace the footage file at it’s source. Close and re-open AE and it will link to the new working file.

Hi there
Well, I have this issue for two days so I was like «OMG!», but then I have found this forum and this post which gave me some clues what should I do or what to try…so: my problem was that when I did try to open my huge project (quantum of clips, pics, effects etc.) I got to that error message and when I clicked «OK» project opens TOTALY EMPTY so I couldn’t try out any of your solutions (having CAPS LOCK ON didn’t help, cos simply there was absolutely nothing inside the project)…so I began scratching my head saying something like: «Hey, wait a sec — what the…?!?!?!». After some messing with empty projects I was able to import my buggy project via IMPOERT>FILE>*.aep, but as soon as I open the composition inside it crashes with exact the same error message (but at least I was able to see what’s inside) + some other errors. So I write them all down to a paper and after some time I noticed there are like 2-3 the same errors that occure most of the time…and those was errors with AF own internal effects of AUTO CONTRAST and LINEAR WIPE (+ one more but that one has no significancy and also I was not sure if that third one is internal effect or not: Classic 3D). Then automaticaly my next thought was: «Hm, OK, I should try disabling those effects and see what will happend…» — well, guess what: IT HELPED!!! I went to C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe After Effects CS6Support FilesPlug-insEffects and there I changed the *.eax extension of those plugins to *.eax- (or any other «unnown» extension :-D). And after some while I narrow it to one definitive internal effect plugin bug of AUTO CONTRAST! So my guess is that the framerate bug (having not whole number as framerate, like some of you suggested here) is probably NOT AFTER EFFECTS INTERNAL BUG AS WHOLE, but reather bug in some of its internal effects dealing with it (the framerate) — hope it will help to resolve this many years long bug (+ sorry: english is not my native language :-D)

I just got this error message as well. I didn’t import a project, but one single video file from my Nokia 808 PureView. Everytime I clicked on it, it gave me the error. There were no errors in Premiere Pro CC, but I saw there that the framerate was 25.007. I right clicked the video file in After Effects CC and went to Interpret Footage > Main, and set it to 25. No more error messages. The video file is H.264 in an .mp4 container.

I got the same error and just like you, the problem was caused by a 24.000 fps video that After Effects interpreted as 23.999 fps.
To prevent the error I forced After Effects to interpret the footage as 24.000 fps. But now After Effects thinks my footage is 45m30s long even thought it’s actually 55m46s.
But I had no problems with this exact same video before the 12.1.0.168 update. Weird.

Hi!
I had the same problem right now. Import the files with Caps Lock allows me interpret my footages. The old frame rate of my files was 15,0015 FPS. I just changed to 15. Problem solved.

This is a very old thread, but I ran into this problem today with the latest Premiere & After Effects. To solve the problem what I did was right-click my footage in Premiere that I wanted to edit in After Effects and click Render & Replace, choose your desired settings and then it will do its conversion. After that replace with after-effects comp and it got rid of my problem.

Hi, probably the frames of your clips does not have the same frames per second. That is why is showing the error. Go to you file ] right click + details and check how many frames Per Second is this file recorded. Then sync you composition settings to the same Frame rate. And voila!!! Hope this may help you.

In project, right click the video and click ‘Inspect Footage’. Then, click ‘Main’. Go to your fps (frames per second) and round it up (or down) to a whole number. That’s it: )

There is another FIX if nothing helps.
Create a NEW Project and Import the old Project. Open the File, it should work. But it can occour again. You also can try to reload an older Autosave. Its a bug…

Постоянно в разное время вылетает ошибка при работе с проектом:
Adobe After Effects error: overflow converting ratio denominators
Например, когда кликаю по маркеру чтобы он переместился с начала проекта в конец.. Да что там в конец.. на 5-10 минут перемещаешь и пишет ошибку!!! Но бывает и при других шагах возникает..
Уже окончательно устал скачивать разные версии Adobe After Effects.
Чистил, удалял программу и снова чистил, перезагружал каждый раз, менял разные версии программ, прописывал все пути к папкам на английском, скачал уже саму программу на английском……ничего не помогает! Ну не знаю что мне делать.. уже неделю мучаюсь с этим!
Пожалуйста, помогите решить эту проблему.
P.S. Ниже привел скрины ошибки и моего компьютера.

C любым (( … чаще всего когда перемещаю маркер из конца в конец или с одного расстояния в другое .. Комп вроде новый купил, в памяти все нормально.. и т.д.

Ну, это может быть проблема с декодированием футажа, но Вы говорите, что это происходит на любых композициях (я просто предположил, что и на композициях без видео-футажей тоже), в любых версиях AE.

Сейчас сделал просто, закинул картинку, накинул музыку, сделал пару надписей шрифта, и переместил маркер и ………. опять та же [хрень} !!!
Может повлиять время проекта, оно у меня 3 часа?

Ну, Вы уже почти близки к разгадке! Что изменилось между тем, когда Вы нормально работали с этими проектами и сейчас?
Судя по Вашему описанию, Вы поменяли какие-то компоненты системы, или даже всю, и всё перестало работать. Так что тут наверное уместнее будет задать вопрос саппорту Адоба.

Удалил все программы и все что закачено было 3-х недельной давности.. деинсталировал, почистил все CCleaner. Установил уже старую версию AE — вопрос не решился!!! Уж и незнаю теперь точно, что же теперь делать???

А что говорит тех. поддержка? Просто, если времени реально нет, спрашивать на форуме не самое быстрое решение проблемы.
K-Lite в принципе — зло, даже если безотносительно к AE.

Вобщем когда снес К-Lite кодек пак, поставил новый, появилось возможность при первом клике убрать всплывающее окно с ошибкой, ранее не давало закрыть, приходилось сносить только через диспетчер задач, ….. и это уже прогресс))
Окошечко с ошибочкой все еще дружат со мной ))
K-Lite не просто беда, а большая беда.
То что Вы его удалили, ещё пол-дела. Вряд ли избавитесь от всех хвостов. Разве что повезёт.
Мне помогла только переустановка системы.

Hello all — I’m having problems with an AE project. I created it in 15.1.1 and need to make some modifications to the file. I’m fairly new to AE so may not know correct terminology
I have had the problem in 17.0.6 and 16.1.3, both of which are installed on my machine. Mac os 10.13.6 on a MPB 15″ 2017
The project contains some TIFF files, an MP3 and a WAV. I open the file and get the message that it needs to be converted to the latest version. So far so good, it opens and I can save it. I can open the saved file with no problem. The WAV is on the timeline where I placed it
I then add a new WAV file, again I can open and save the file. Place the new WAV on the timeline, all is ok. The old WAV and new WAV are on the timeline, as I want it
At some point, after saving and closing, the file opens with the Overflow converting ratio denominators (17 :: 18) error. The project will still open, but all audio files are gone from the timeline. They still show up in the project library, and still play when I preview the project. When I tried to delete the files from the library AE crashes, details below

I just installed after effects CC 2015 today and then installed an update to After Effects dealing with Adobe Camera Raw. I am running Windows 7. Now I cannot import .dng filmed on the Blackmagic film camera in After Effects. CAB opens and shows me the first image in the DNG sequence very well but when I close the ADR I get the error message:
After effects error: 3415 Photoshop file format error.
The image I see in After Effects is therefore the HD Bars and tone, which indicates a missing file or not visible.

Hey all, I recently had this problem with my Adobe after effects (Version 13.2.0.49) CC. I had this on my previous version and after the update to the latest version of the software, I always get the ‘ After Effects error: Preview RAM needs 2 or more images for playback ‘ each time I try preview RAM. I also have completely uninstalled and reinstalled AE and attempted to purge the of memory, but I still don’t have the same error.
Another question (not sure whether or not it is related to the error of RAM Preview?), is that when I press the play button, the green bar that is usually created at the playhead appears for 1 frame, then goes immediately after the playhead moves to the next frame.
Any help would be appreciated

Use Adobe Media Encoder to change the background of the MP4 in a proper production codec (QuickTime with the Photo-JPEG codec would be a good thing.)

If you absolutely need to use ray-traced rendering engine, what are you trying to use it on? Try it with only a layer of simple form you need to do 3d just to eliminate the problems of others, possibly complications, a project. What CC 2014 version are you running? 13.1? 13.2?

Hi I use a Mac Pro, 10.9 mavericks, after effects CC 2014 with the last update (installed last week) and I still get an error that I have to force quit after effects. The error message reads:

I don’t know what that means or how to fix it. I tried to repair disk permissions, but this has no effect.
It happens when I apply some effects to something that worked before save it AFAIK (like Knoll unmult).
It also happens when I try to open some project files that worked before the upgrade.
Adobe may just make a version of After Effects that has not some happening a huge, inexplicable problem?

Hello I just created a project in AE CC and wanted to also save a version for CS6.
Everything went well but when I tried to open the project in CS6 I received the following error message:

After effects CC is much, much better handling of the characters that are outside the defined character used by the operating system to its current settings of the language. Thus, the file names and paths (and other channels) which operate very well in after effects CC and later may fail with older versions.
For example, if you run your operating system and applications in English and Chinese characters in your file names, After Effects CS6 and earlier will fail, but after effects CC and earlier will succeed.

Is the drive in FAT32 formatted accidentally? If so, you can only restore up to 4 GB for a single file. Try to make a TIFF sequence instead. Tip of litte — press the LZW compression checkbox in the options for a lossless compression format, this allows you to keep the path file size down.

So, about a week before I did a fresh 64-bit Windows 7 ultimate on a new PC and installation subscribed to the Adobe Creative Cloud, After Effects CS6 and Photoshop CS6 of Adobe Application Manager installation, then all updates made (and I just checked right now at 22:35 on 26 July, I have the latest version of everything).
After effects was working at normal, and then later, I tried to import a .psd Photoshop and I got the error message:

When I close After Effects and reopen it without hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys, it goes immediately to crashing.
Of course chip-* answer is ‘ then hold down Ctrl-Alt-Shift, dummy «and I’ll do it for now, but is there any idea what is the problem?

значит глюкнуло что-то. перекодируй виртуалдабом, чем угодно. в такой же формат.
У композиции и видео-файла разная частота кадров. ПКМ по видео в окошке Project, Interpret Footage — Main, в строке Conform to frame rate выставляете такой fps, как у композиции. Или наоборот — меняете его у композиции на близкий к видео.
Над видео: Предпросмотр > полный размер
ВАРИАНТЫ
1) ищите картинки или видео в проекте не того размера и удаляйте их, вставляйте под размер экрана и дроп-fps чтобы совпадало бляха муха чертова эта ошибка
2) длину проекта по времени не делать больше чем последний кусок видео файла

После переноса проекта на другой винт, и открытия в after effects cs3 (проект создан в after effects 7),
выскакивает при каждой попытке на что-то нажать эта ошибка:
after effects error: zero denominator converting ratio denominators (17::18)
Где-то на зарубежных форумах прочитал советы:
1. создать новый проект и импортировать в него старый
НЕ ПОМОГЛО
2. попытаться отключать слои, пока ошибка не уйдёт
НЕ ГОДИТСЯ. Очень много слоёв, сложная структура прекомпоза и тд. Но на 7-ом отлично всё работало
Ещё на aeclub у чувака была така ошибка. Но он с ней сам разобрался, поставив кодек MainConcept DV 2.0.4
Я сделал и это, но не заработало.
Больше инфы про эту ошибку не нашёл. Хотя есть люди, сталкнувшиеся с ней, совета по решению не удалось найти.
Думал, может, если поставить 7ой афтер, может пройдёт.. Но, кажется, дело именно в переносе проекта, а не в версии афтера. Так как те, у кого была эта ошибка, не меняли версию, а именно переносили проект.
Что же, в конце концов, теперь делать?
Неужели многие месяцы труда на смарку?

Ошибка в интерпретации проекта может быть связана с различием в региональных настройках. Так, в английских версиях ОС и CS в качестве десятичного разделителя используется ТОЧКА. В россияских версиях соответственно ЗАПЯТАЯ. При сохранении/чтении проекта часто возникают связанные с этим сбои. Особенно этим грешили AP до CS3 (хотя у моего приятеля и CS3 грешат).
Возможно, ваша проблема связана с этим. Убедитель, что региональные настройки старого комплекта ОС+CS совпадают с новым.

Точно. Раньше стояла англоязычная винда, а теперь русская.
Спасибо за подсказку.
Переустановить винду — не так уж страшно по сравнению с потерей проекта.
Хотя странно, что у зарубежных колег эта проблема тоже возникала.
Но кто их знает, на каких они виндах сидят..

переустанавливать Винду не надо — потому как проблема не в языке, а в региональных настройках (наверно не только у славян десятичный делитель запятая) — проблему можно заиметь и на аглицкой винде. И страдали от запятой не только Адобы (еще и Иллюстратор), а также и 3дсмакс и аудиоплагины Вейвс…

Возможно, что в проекте содержится другая ошибка, раз там есть деление на ноль. Открыть в 7-ке, проверить и сохранить по-новой.

Простите, нельзя ли поподробней? Что конкретно проверить? Что значит деление на ноль и где его искать?
Что именно проверить — ответил holydiver.
Ошибка 17::18 витиевато говорит о простой вещи: если знаменатель равен нулю, то вот вам и деление на ноль.
Откуда взялся ноль? — вопрос совсем другой. Это к адобовским программерам.
Ну, а самый очевидный метод восстановления проекта — возврат к той версии инструмента, на котором данный проект готовился.
